Ellwyn House in Edinburgh operates as an adults-only hotel set in a converted Victorian house, with a garden, a modern Indian restaurant, and a bar. Guests benefit from free WiFi, private check-in and check-out, and a 24-hour front desk. Rooms at Ellwyn House come with private bathrooms, tea and coffee makers, and flat-screen TVs with streaming services. Some rooms have bay windows offering views of Arthur's Seat or the sea. The on-site restaurant serves Indian cuisine with vegetarian, vegan, and dairy-free options, and breakfast includes continental, full English/Irish, and vegan selections. The hotel is 2 km from Portobello Beach and near the National Museum of Scotland and Edinburgh Waverley station. Bus route 26 runs directly across the street, providing a 15-to-20-minute journey to the city centre. On-site amenities include a garden with outdoor furniture, a picnic area, and meeting/banquet facilities. A continental breakfast is available each morning at Ellwyn House.
Pros
The staff are consistently praised for being friendly, helpful, and welcoming.
The residential area provides a quiet atmosphere after a day in the city centre.
Free street parking is available outside the hotel.
The bar includes a pool table and playing cards for entertainment.
Cons
The hotel's location requires a 15-20 minute bus ride to reach the city centre.
The hotel has no lift, and guests may need to carry luggage up to three flights of stairs.
“Ellwyn House strikes a fine balance for those seeking a quieter Edinburgh base with easy access to the city center via a frequent bus service. I found the comfortable rooms and helpful hosts contribute to a genuine sense of value, a pleasant surprise given the location's proximity to both Portobello beach and Leith. The on-site Indian restaurant, with its modern, cosy design, is an undeniable bonus for an evening meal.”
